Inventor Awarded Patent for Novel Skin Protector for the Frail Elderly
CANTON, MA, Dec 06, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- The United States Patent Office has awarded a patent to Ed Goodwin, president of HipSaver Inc., for its line of DermaSaver(R) skin protectors. The DermaSaver products are called "tubes" and provide a loose fitting protective layer of resilient three dimensional fabric to protect the skin on the arms and legs off the frail elderly. Traditional products available on the market fit tightly and are made of flat fabric that offers no pressure or shock protection. In awarding the patent, the patent office notes that no three dimensional fabric skin protectors were available prior to the DermaSaver tubes. Lake Oswego's second affordable senior housing complex to celebrate grand opening Friday
The second subsidized senior housing complex in Lake Oswego is scheduled for a grand opening this week after four years of planning and initial opposition from neighbours. The new residents of the Oakridge Park Apartments, at 4255 Oakridge Rd., have been moving in since around Thanksgiving. Martha McLennan, executive director of Northwest Housing Alternatives, said by the complex’s Friday grand opening, all but four of the 45 one-bedroom units will be occupied. The event starts at 1 p.m.

Conn. elderly apartments get federal help to convert some units to assisted living
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Two Connecticut apartment communities that provide housing for elderly people are getting major federal grants to convert some of their apartments into assisted living units. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development says the operators of two complexes serving low-income seniors in New Haven and Norwalk are each getting $2.8 million through a federal program distributing $23.7 million in five states.
Medicare Drug Discount Saves Elderly $1.5 Billion, U.S. Says
Dec. 6 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama’s administration says the health-care overhaul he championed has this year saved Medicare recipients an average of $569 a person in drug costs. About 2.65 million people ages 65 and older have spent about $1.5 billion less on prescription drugs under a discount program on medicines created by the law signed in March 2010, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said today in a statement. About 24 million beneficiaries in Medicare, the U.S. health program for the elderly and disabled, also had taken advantage of the law’s requirement for free preventive care, such as an annual checkup, during the first 11 months of the year, the agency said.

The Republic came in either first or second among 19 countries polled in each of six criteria: rule of law, openness to international trade and business, political stability, taxation, corruption, as well as fiscal and monetary administration.
Mixed views on private retirement scheme
PETALING JAYA: Fund managers are mixed on the feasibility of setting up a private retirement scheme (PRS), as they need to know how it is governed and how different it is from a typical unit trust. On Monday, the Securities Commission (SC) finalised the eligibility requirements for PRS providers. The recent enactment of the Capital Markets and Services Amendment Act 2011 provides the regulatory framework for a PRS industry, including empowering the SC to approve the providers.
