Queensland Ambulance Service to get new patient transport system
Growing demand from an ageing population has prompted to Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) to begin the search for a new ambulance transport request and scheduling. According to the agency, some 20,000 medically authorised non-urgent patient transfers are provided per month, and demand for these services is on the rise due to demographic and population health factors. To help meet the data collection, resource utilisation, and reporting required to manage the demand for the transport service, QAS is now investigating available options. "The QAS has investigated how other ambulance services world-wide manage similar demand and service delivery challenges," Queensland Health Documents read.

Big Business Endorded PC Reforms
The research and lobby group representing 100 of Australia's largest and most powerful corporations has thrown its weight behing the campaign for urgent reform of Australia's aged care system. The Business Council of Australia (BCA) yesterday released its considered response to the Productivity Commission's final inquiry report, Caring for Older Australians saying the Australian Parliament must agree a long-term plan to reform the health and aged care system to address an unsustainable growth in demand and rising costs that it says will consume more than 40 per cent of most government budgets by 2050.

Top of the World feeling for Elderly
SINGAPORE  - It's always good to make friends in high places. And they don't come much higher than Marina Bay Sands SkyPark. About 100 elderly people, some of them in wheelchairs, got a rare opportunity to socialise yesterday while drinking in the spectacular views from the top of the 200m structure. They and their families were taken to the integrated resort as a treat, with Ms Grace Fu, Member of Parliament for Yuhua.

Fortune cookies to help the elderly
Several senior citizens took time off yesterday to help pack fortune cookies for the Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore's (APBS) Cookies for Charity Programme. The cookies - at S$10 per box - will be sold at APBS' booth at the Chinatown Pavilion at Banda Street from Dec 30 to Jan 24. APBS hopes to raise S$30,000 in support of the Meal & Grocery Programme for the needy elderly living in Kreta Ayer.

Senior citizen students in South Florida earning degrees into their 70s, 80s
"Graduating senior" is taking on a whole new meaning at South Florida's colleges. Both Florida Atlantic University and Broward College presented diplomas this month to students in their 80s. As the local 70-plus population has grown, graduation ceremonies now often include an older scholar picking up a bachelor's or master's degree.
